A non-immigrant visa is an authorization placed in your passport that allows temporary travel to the United States. Typically, individuals from foreign countries seeking entry into the United States must apply for and obtain an appropriate American visa for the specific purpose of their trip. For example, those intending to visit Disney World and/or New York would need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa.
Students, exchange visitors, tourists, and holders of temporary work authorization can remain in the country within the validity period specified in their approval notice.
Additionally, many foreign residents already in the United States may need a visa to re-enter the country after international travel.
There are also exceptions to visa requirements for Canadians and certain other foreigners eligible for visa waiver programs. If you are unsure whether you need a visa for your travels, consulting an immigration attorney is advisable.
